Blue Group Curriculum
Topics
Each month we focus on one topic covering a broad theme which children can relate to. Some examples of these topics are Emergency Numbers, Nature & Animals, Space, Weather Seasons and many more.
Every year we have an extended two-month topic focusing on the world we live in. We go into detail about the continents, different languages and cultures. The children enjoy presenting culture and heritage from their own countries to each other.
Arts and Crafts
Throughout the year, our topic-related Art & Craft Projects require a wide variety of materials and skills. In addition to these projects, the Drawing Table is open on a daily basis during Free Play, allowing the children to be creative when they want to.
Literary Development
We read the children a story on a daily basis and ensure that the book we read always has a meaning behind it. Throughout the storytime we actively engage with the children and ask them questions relating to the story. We find this improves the children’s concentration and listening skills greatly and also exposes them to a wide range of English vocabulary.
We have a specific corner of the classroom only for reading - the children can use this area at anytime during free play. Our selection of books cover a vast array of topics and are educationally stimulating.
Reading
Two afternoon circles per week are dedicated to teaching the children the fundamental basics of reading. This is achieved using flash cards and simple stories thus supporting the children’s ability to read simple sentences, and having a basic grasp of reading before entering school.
Pre-School Time
Every Wednesday we have pre-school time. This involves splitting the group into two and one half is taken to the gym for half an hour exercise programme and the other half stay in the classroom. We cover a range of subjects including Maths, Shape Recognition, Consequences, Future, Present & Past Tense Estimation, Measurement and improving our Language Schools.
The children learn through brightly coloured books, games and other educational tools. All the topics covered are vital for preparing the children for school and they greatly improve their cognitive development which is essential for children in this age group.
Worksheets
Pre-school time is always followed by a relevant worksheet. The worksheets focus on improving the children’s pen control, cutting and gluing, organising and general concentration. It also encourages the children’s ability to sit for a longer period of time and this is vital in preparing them for what they will experience in school.
Twice a day, the children also sit for around 20 minutes to complete a worksheet whether it’s a worksheet for ‘Letters’, ‘Numbers’, ‘Cut & Glue’ or ‘Colouring’. This helps prepare the children for sitting and concentrating for longer periods which is something they will be required to do at school.
